Linux Project

Crew's Linux project aims to provide an alpha version of what could be the next environment here at CCIS. Unlike past incarnations, the project's main focus is on experimenting with and providing infrastructure for a new Unix environment here at CCIS.

Questions, Comments, and Involvment with Linux @ CCIS

All questions and commments about the Linux machines in the lab should go to the linux-users mailing list. For Problem Reports please send mail to linux@rt.crew.ccs.neu.edu from a CCIS machine.

Also, if you would like to request software to be installed, send mail to linux@rt.crew.ccs.neu.edu. Please try to give as much detail as possible, and we will try to get your software installed quickly.

If you need assistance with any of the Linux machines, you can come to 314 in West Village H during the day and we will try our best to help. You may also join the #linux-dev channel on Crew's IRC server.

If you are interested in helping out with the project you should join the linux-dev mailing list here at CCIS. Weekly meetings are held in 314 West Village H at 7:00PM on Mondays.

Also feel free to join #linux-dev on the Crew IRC server.

Project Goals

  • To provide a full featured Linux based unix environment.
  • To make the environment as easy to manage as possible.
  • To create documentation for that environment.

  • LinuxBuildNotes - Building software on Linux at CCIS, assuming you have the proper priveleges.
  • LinuxNames - The machines have been named after comic book villains.
  • NewDebianProgress - The progress of the current transition.
  • WhyUbuntu - Why the heck did we switch from Debian to Ubuntu?
  • WhyDebian - Why the heck did we originally choose Debian of all possible distributions?
  • RegressionTests - Tests that should be performed to make sure all imperative services work.
  • MachineStatus - Status of machines for this project.

Project Milestones

  • (Done) Built Latveria (the project's main server), and document a base install.
  • (Done) Setup FAI so that we can do a base install.
  • (Done) Setup Radmind which includes all of our packages and configurations.
  • (Done) Finalized roster of supported packages : ProvisionalLinuxSoftware
  • (Done) Configured lab machines services and packages.
  • (Done) Created a mail server for the Linux environment.
  • (Done) Created a means of generating user accounts for the Linux environment.
  • (Done) Ditch FAI for Radmind running from a modified Debian-Installer CD
  • (Done) Switch the distribution to Ubuntu.
  • (Pending) Add CUPS to handle printing

History

We owe many thanks to the original members of this project, as they went through all of the necessary steps to obtain hardware for our use, as well as set up the initial Slackware-based image which had been in use for many years before our switch to Debian/FAI.
